Some songs flirt with the spotlight. Magdalene walks straight into it, lights a cigarette, and asks what you are willing to lose to stay there. “Mattress Actress” is the new single from the Los Angeles artist who calls herself the pop star for the freaks, and it sits right in that messy middle between Alternative Rock grit and Alt Pop shine.
The track is a tongue-in-cheek dance song about choosing the spotlight or love. Magdalene has said it is about trying to stay in someone’s life and in their bed even after the relationship is over, and about the addiction to both love and fame. That tension is the whole point. Conventional comfort on one side. Creative freedom and success on the other. She does not pretend the choice is clean.
Musically it hits with a sexy, upbeat pop-rock pulse and a darker undercurrent. Co-written and produced with Slush Puppy (ADÈLA, Nessa Barrett, CORTIS), Dylan Harrison (ADÈLA, Current Joys), Ava Morse (Babe America), and Leo Forest (Current Joys, Michael Medrano), it was the first song written for her forthcoming debut album. It came out of a Joshua Tree writing camp and carries her New Mexico roots in the dust and heat of the idea. The verses play like a performance: “In your sheets I’m a star / I’ll be whoever you want.” The hook lands on the title phrase and that “oh so picturesque” refrain, which is both a pose and a warning.
The video leans into the same theme. Directed by Mitch DeQuillettes (Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino, ADÉLA), with creative direction from Magdalene and Kevin Zambrano, it treats cameras like stones. The biblical story of the woman accused of adultery becomes a comment on public judgment and the false camaraderie of the entertainment industry. Stones get swapped for lenses. That is the kind of high-concept move Magdalene has been building toward, turning desert-born childhood into a canvas for satirical pop-rock.
Her lane is already clear. PAPER has grouped her with the rockers pulling the genre back toward pop. She has landed on Spotify’s Fresh Finds Pop and Ones To Watch’s #NowWatching playlist, plus co-signs from Model/Actriz, Current Joys, Surf Curse, and former PAPER Editor-In-Chief Justin Moran. Across the 14-track album still coming late fall 2026, she keeps circling fame, sex, religion, and American culture. “Mattress Actress” is the first brick of that world, and it already sounds like someone who knows the cost of staying on camera.
Alt Pop right now loves a glossy surface with a bruise underneath. Alternative Rock is having another moment where attitude matters as much as polish. Magdalene sits in both rooms at once. She is not sanding off the unhinged parts. She is putting them in the chorus.
