Showtek and Francis Waves Unleash "Runaway": Hard Dance Meets British Indie

0

Some collaborations make sense on paper. Others make you do a double take, and then hit replay ten times in a row. "Runaway" by Showtek featuring Francis Waves falls firmly in that second camp. A Dutch hardstyle legend and the frontman of one of Britain's most loved indie bands on the same record? Yep, it's happening, and it works.

Who's Behind "Runaway"?

If you've been anywhere near a festival main stage in the last decade, you know Showtek. The duo is made up of brothers Wouter and Sjoerd Janssen from Eindhoven, and they've been pioneers of dance music for years. They started out as hardstyle DJs and producers and gave the world "FTS", which is still celebrated as one of the biggest hardstyle anthems ever made. Since then they've racked up over a billion streams, platinum certifications, and headline slots at Tomorrowland and Ultra.

On the other side of the collab is Kieran Shudall, best known as the frontman of Circa Waves. Here he steps out under his dance alias, Francis Waves. Shudall formed Circa Waves in Liverpool in 2013, and the band broke through with indie anthems like "T-Shirt Weather" and "Stuck in My Teeth". Their 2015 debut "Young Chasers" landed in the UK Top 10, and what followed was a run of five consecutive UK Top 20 albums. "Sad Happy" peaked at number four in 2020, and "Never Going Under" topped the UK Independent Albums chart in 2023. In 2025 the band returned with "Death & Love, Pt. 1".

Two Worlds, One Record

So what happens when you put those two worlds together? You get "Runaway", a dance pop track that unites the raw power of hard dance with the melodic instinct of British indie. The mood swings between moody, energetic and happy, which is exactly what you want from a track built for both late-night drives and packed dancefloors.

Showtek call it a chance "to explore another experience". As Wouter Janssen puts it: "We've always been big fans of British pop and indie music. Collaborating with artists from different genres is key for us to create unique productions. Blending dance and rave sounds with a strong vocal like this is a great way for us to explore another experience."

That strong vocal is the secret weapon here. Shudall is no stranger to big choruses, and his unmistakable voice gives the track an emotional, singalong quality that pure club tracks often miss. Under it, the production carries that signature Showtek punch: driving energy, a big build and a sound that's made to fill a room.

Why This Collab Matters Right Now

Genre lines in dance music are blurrier than ever. More and more electronic producers are teaming up with indie and rock vocalists, chasing tracks that work on the radio and at festivals alike. "Runaway" is a strong example of that trend, and it shows Showtek are still willing to step outside their comfort zone after all these years. For Shudall, it's a fresh chapter that puts his voice in front of a whole new audience.

"Runaway" is out now on F_CK THE SYSTEM, released on October 2nd, 2026, as Showtek's third commercial single on the label.
