Dozi Turns Struggle Into Confidence on Afro-Fusion Single "Taliban"

0

Born from pain, driven by ambition and fuelled by the hunger to win. That's how Nigerian artist Dozi describes his new single "Taliban", and you can hear that energy from the first beat. It's a bold, unapologetic Afro-fusion track that turns life's struggles into something you can actually dance to.

Who Is Dozi?

Dozi is the stage name of Njoku Gregory. He hails from Imo State and was born and raised in Lagos, the city that has shaped so much of modern African music. He started his musical journey at an early age by miming to songs from legends like Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars and Wande Coal, before he began writing and making his own songs.

His sound is steeped in afrobeat, Afro-pop and highlife, with a bit of Afro-Caribbean flavour mixed in. Dozi even has his own name for it: "Unlock music", which he describes as a sub-genre of afrobeats and, in his own words, a cry for freedom.

The Sound of Taliban

"Taliban" blends infectious African rhythms with melodic vocals and a raw, street-inspired energy. The track carries an unapologetic confidence, and it's clearly written by someone who has been through a lot and refuses to slow down. Dozi presents it as a statement about his relentless pursuit of success, turning struggle into melodic Afro-fusion with purpose and emotion.

The title is clearly meant to grab attention, but the story behind the song is about grit and ambition. According to Dozi, the track is a statement from his DOZAGE era: Dozi's time, Dozi's era, and a journey from surviving to gaining everything he once prayed for. That mix of hard edges and smooth melodies is what makes Afro-fusion so addictive, and Dozi leans into both sides.

Afro-Fusion Keeps Taking Over

Afrobeats and Afro-fusion have become one of the biggest global music movements of the past decade, with Lagos at the heart of it. What keeps the scene exciting is how many artists are adding their own personal twist, from highlife roots to street sounds and Caribbean influences. Dozi's approach fits right into that, with a sound that's rooted in Nigeria but clearly aimed at the world.

"Taliban" was released independently on September 29th, 2026.
