Ear Mind Eye "Sybarite" Review: 2019 Acid Cut on Slice Records

0

"Sybarite" is not a 2026 premiere, and that is part of why it is interesting. Ear Mind Eye's acid cut landed on November 30, 2019 as track ten on Acid Slice – Welcome to Acid City, the sixteen-track compilation from Melbourne's Slice Records, and it still sits there as a 4:36 instrumental.

Acid Slice, Melbourne

Welcome to Acid City was the second acid compilation from Acid Slice, Melbourne's only acid-dedicated club night, put out with Slice Records. The compilation gathers local and connected acts across acid styles, with names such as Honeysmack, Mike Callander, Jani Ho, dyLab and BLK KVR alongside Ear Mind Eye.

Ear Mind Eye also co-compiled the record with dyLab. Catalogue number SLICE026, cover art by Tristan Narbrough, mastering by Gareth Fox at Studio Schizoid: those credits are all on the Bandcamp page. Apple Music files the album under Techno and carries a 2019 Slice Records copyright line.

A Pleasure-Seeker on Track Ten

The title "Sybarite" points at a pleasure-seeker, which fits an acid compilation built for sweaty rooms. At 4:36 the track is mid-length for the album: shorter than Tangent's ten-minute "Nidah," longer than a radio edit. It is instrumental, so there is no vocal hook to lean on; the interest is in how the acid line and the drums are arranged.

We are not going to pretend we are reviewing a brand-new upload. The stream making the rounds now is a revisit of a 2019 compilation cut, and that is how we are treating it.

What Came After

Ear Mind Eye stayed with Slice Records. In November 2023 the project released the Instant Slack EP, which includes "Sybarite (Garden Mix)," an eleven-minute rework of the same idea. That later version shows the producer was still interested in the track years after the compilation. Other Slice-era and later titles in the catalog include "Moonshot," "Kairos" and "Neon Tetra."

The lane is electronic psychedelic music that pulls from psy, underground techno and breaks, made to work under the stars as much as in a dark room. "Sybarite" is one early data point in that line.

Final Thoughts

"Sybarite" is a 2019 acid instrumental from Ear Mind Eye on Slice Records' Welcome to Acid City compilation, later revisited as a Garden Mix in 2023. If you dig Melbourne acid and compilation deep cuts, it is worth pulling up. Do you prefer the original 4:36 "Sybarite" or the eleven-minute Garden Mix on Instant Slack? Tell us in the comments.

A Tip for Independent Artists

Ear Mind Eye co-compiled the album that hosts "Sybarite," which is a smart way to keep your own track in a stronger release. If you run a night or a crew, a shared compilation can carry your music further than a lonely single. When you do put out your own EP, DistroKid (affiliate link) can deliver it to Spotify, Apple Music and Beatport-friendly stores, with 7% off your membership through that link.
