Thylacine x Nils Hoffmann – Nawa: Organic House Journey Through Namibia

0

Ever wonder what happens when electronic music leaves the studio and meets the actual landscape? Thylacine has been answering that question for years, and his latest collaboration with Nils Hoffmann on “Nawa” feels like another chapter in that ongoing conversation. The track sits right in that sweet spot of organic house and melodic house where hypnotic grooves, ethereal vocals, and warm synths turn field recordings into something you can sink into.

Thylacine, the French producer and multi-instrumentalist, built his reputation by composing while moving. Previous projects took him across the Trans-Siberian Railway, through Turkey, the Andes, and the Faroe Islands. ROADS Vol. 3, released in October 2025 on Intuitive Records, continues that approach in Namibia. He traveled the country in a self-sufficient, solar-powered caravan studio converted from a 1972 Airstream, recording in deserts, mountains, and villages. The original “Nawa” weaves in recordings of Ozohere’s Himba, folding voices and traditional musical expressions from the Himba community into his electronic sound. It is less about exotic samples and more about encounters, cultural exchange, and the time he gave himself to listen.

Nils Hoffmann, the Berlin-based producer known for warm, melodic progressive and deep house work on labels like Anjunadeep, takes that foundation somewhere new. He keeps the ethereal character and distinctive elements of the original while shifting the energy toward something more progressive. Flowing grooves, expansive atmospheres, and richly layered synths sit alongside the organic textures. The result moves between dream house and progressive-leaning deep electronica without losing the soul of the Namibia-inspired source. Hoffmann has said he loved working with the ethereal recordings and wanted to keep the unique parts while bringing them into his own style. He finished the remix while on tour in Nashville.

What stands out in the organic house and melodic house space right now is exactly this kind of balance. Producers are leaning into acoustic textures, natural percussion, and ambient layers that still lock into a groove you can play late at night. “Nawa” does that cleanly: the warm synths and hypnotic pulse give it club-ready weight, while the field recordings and airy melodies keep it grounded in a sense of place. It feels immersive without turning into pure background music. The organic elements from the original travel well into Hoffmann’s production, so the track never loses the sense that it started somewhere real.

The collaboration makes sense on paper and in the music. Thylacine draws from travel, real-world meetings, and the sounds of different places. Hoffmann brings refined melody, subtle rhythmic progression, and immersive electronic detail. Together they open another path for the ROADS project ahead of the album’s reissue this fall. The spirit of those Namibia journeys keeps traveling, connecting local soundscapes with the wider melodic and organic house scenes.

If you have been looking for organic house that still feels personal, or melodic house that carries a story beyond the drop, “Nawa” is worth a listen. The grooves pull you in, the textures reward closer attention, and the whole thing sits comfortably between listening and dancing. What do you think of this kind of travel-rooted electronic production? Does the mix of field recordings and progressive energy work for you, or do you prefer your organic house cleaner? Drop a comment and let me know. Stream the track, share it with anyone who needs something both grounded and expansive, and give Thylacine and Nils Hoffmann the support if the sound sticks with you.
