There’s something about a song that feels like it was born at a house party—messy, loud, a little blurry around the edges, and impossible to shake the next morning. Stella Starfox just dropped “Hammered by a Woman,” and it nails that exact feeling. This new indie pop / alt pop cut captures the rush of getting properly wrecked and the way one person can completely take over your headspace at the same time.
The band has been building this sound for years. Ben Gardner, Tommy Fuccillo, and Matt Hatch have been playing together since junior high, cycling through different names and lineups until Stella Starfox locked in around 2018. Their early singles, the ones that made up the Bathroom Pop EP, already showed off that mix of rock, psychedelia, hip-hop, and electronica. Think Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s laid-back weirdness, Mac DeMarco’s slacker charm, and a touch of The Strokes’ sharp edges, all filtered through a New England lens. They’ve played festivals like Levitate and opened for acts such as Makeout Reef, The Ocho, Post Sex Nachos, and VEAUX. The current lineup—Gardner and Fuccillo on vocals and guitar, Hatch on keys and guitar, Mike “Brown” Bloniarz on drums, and Rory McRae on bass—feels locked in and ready.
“Hammered by a Woman” came together in a very real way. After one of the members broke a wrist snowboarding and couldn’t play instruments the usual way, the band turned to GarageBand. The original idea was so strong they kept pieces of it when they moved into Cubase. Then they did the smartest possible thing for a song about getting wasted: they recorded friends singing gang vocals at an actual house party. You can hear that raw, slightly out-of-control energy in the track. The song uses intoxication as a metaphor—alcohol hitting hard, and that same consuming pull when someone takes over your psyche completely. It’s playful and a little dark at the same time, which sits perfectly in the alt-pop lane right now.
Indie and alt-pop keep thriving because artists are still willing to get weird and personal instead of chasing perfect radio polish. Stella Starfox have been doing that for a while—whether it was the Bathroom Pop era, the Lost Files Vol. 1 collection of old demos, or newer cuts like “Chicken Pock Drop Top” and “Pass the Pass.” “Hammered by a Woman” feels like another step toward the full-length album they’ve been teasing, Off Exotica. They’re planning to push this one hard: music blogs, radio, live shows, and a targeted social campaign. That DIY-plus-ambition approach is still the backbone of a lot of the best independent music coming out of scenes like theirs.
