UNTER STRØM Ghost in Wires: Dark Bass House Built for the Club

0

Bass house in 2026 still lives or dies on one thing: a low end that tells a room what to do before anyone checks the track name. The charts stay packed with punchy, mixable club tools, and the records that stick are the ones that keep the groove functional without sanding off the personality. UNTER STRØM’s Ghost in Wires arrives right in that lane. Southern California duo Alex Gonzales and John Kunkel sent it as bass house and electro house, and the brief they attached is simple: dark, melodic, and built for the club.

The name is the first clue that this is not a bright, festival-pop bounce. UNTER STRØM is the shared project of Gonzales, known through Matte Blvck, and Kunkel, known through The New Division and John Grand. They formed it out of a shared obsession with pushing techno, melodic house, and industrial sonics somewhere less mapped. The result sits between warehouse intensity and cinematic atmosphere, moving through dark electronic music, techno, electro, and industrial sound design. Ghost in Wires is the first UNTER STRØM track with vocals from Gonzales, which is a real shift after a run of instrumental club cuts.

That run is Between Forms, their debut EP on Breathing Records. The project debuted in 2025 with Breathing, then landed on the label that launched with INHALE Vol. 1. Between Forms closed out through singles including Orynth, Fold, Fragment, and Stumbling. Support around the wider project has included Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy, Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance, Ferry Corsten, and Markus Schulz, mostly via Kunkel’s earlier melodic work bleeding into the new identity. Ghost in Wires is the next chapter, not a reset. It opens INHALE Vol. 2, the second installment of Breathing Records’ compilation series.

The label frames that compilation as a snapshot of an evolving identity: dark electronic music, techno, industrial, electro, and melodic club sounds, chosen for atmosphere, experimentation, and movement. Opening with this track is a clear statement. Breathing Records wants a home for electronic music that lives between the underground, the dance floor, and the cinematic. Ghost in Wires is written to occupy that middle space rather than pick one side.

What you get, on the information they sent, is a club record with a human voice dropped into colder architecture. Gonzales’s vocals are the new element. The production brief stays on shadow, melody, and dance-floor purpose rather than a radio hook. That fits the wider 2026 club picture. Tech house still leads a lot of functional DJ sets, but bass house and electro house keep a lane open for records with more weight in the low end and a sharper electro edge. A track that can sit in a dark room without losing its melodic line is useful right now, especially on a compilation that is selling atmosphere as much as peak-time utility.

There is also a live context behind the project. UNTER STRØM played their first public set at a Breathing Records showcase and later released Transmission 003, a long live recording of mostly unreleased material, including vocal ideas they were still developing. Ghost in Wires reads like one of those ideas that survived the room. First vocal, compilation opener, same duo, same label. That is a tidy story for a project that has only been public for about a year.

If you are chasing new bass house that leans industrial and cinematic instead of cartoon bounce, this is the one to put on. What do you think of this kind of dark electro-house crossover? Let me know in the comments.
